posted jan 22, 2010

Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie are planning a massive 25th anniversary re-recording of "We Are the World."

The timing couldn't be better, sadly enough.

The duo is summoning lots and lots of talent from Grammy weekend to stay an extra night - Monday Feb. 1 - and come to the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. There, they will celebrate a quarter century since Ken Kragen, Richie and Michael Jackson organized the original "We Are the World" with Jones.

Korea Telecom to intro Apple’s 4G iPhone featuring OLED screen, live video chat in April

posted jan 12, 2010

I can't wait for this one!

"KT, an exclusive local partner of Apple to sell iPhone, plans to introduce an upgraded version of the device ― 4G iPhone ― to the domestic market in April at the earliest," Kim Yoo-chul reports for The Korea Times. "'We don't see any bigger hurdle to introduce 4G iPhones here, as legal issues were completely cleared. It’s possible to launch the devices within the first half,' a high-ranking KT executive told The Korea Times, asking not to be identified," Yoo-chul reports. "'Still, there are some 3G iPhone stocks. But KT and Apple have reached a broad consensus to introduce the advanced models as early as possible,' according to the executive." "4G iPhones will be equipped with organic light emitting diode (OLED) screens on surface and live video chat functionalities, while removable battery is highly likely," Yoo-chul reports. "The new 4G iPhone is also going to be loaded with dual core processors and higher and powerful graphic chips that can deliver higher video resolutions and better 'still' images when taking pictures.

US digital sales boom - and vinyl comes for the ride!

posted jan 10, 2010

Vinyl sales hit a historical high last year as US music purchases climbed 2.1 percent year on year and digital sales accounted for 40 percent of total US music purchases, Nielsen SoundScan confirmed today, up from 32% in 2008. The news follows an August 2009 NPD Group report which confirmed iTunes-purchased songs now account for 25 percent of the overall music market--both physical and digital - in the U.S.. (During the first half of 2009, iTunes itself snagged a 69 percent share of the overall digital music arena, trailed far behind by Amazon.com with 8 percent - this may have changed but we haven’t yet sourced recent relevant data). Nielsen also note that 10 billion music purchases were made in the US during the last decade (ie, music is not dead). The researchers also provided a dizzying selection of statistics, confirming an 8.3 percent rise in digital track sales (now 1,159 million), while digital album sales reached new records, up 16.1 percent to 76.4 million.

Additional facts of interest:

  • Music purchases in 2009 reached the 1.5 Billion mark, making it the fifth consecutive year music sales have exceeded 1 billion; 1.5 billion (2008), 1.4 billion (2007), 1.2 billion (2006), and 1.01 billion (2005).
  • Music sales exceeded 62 million during week ending December 27, 2009.
  • During 2009 more vinyl albums were purchased (2.5 million) than any other year in the history of Nielsen SoundScan (since 1991). Two out of every three vinyl albums were purchased at an independent music store during the year.
  • The album format appears to be in recovery - digital album sales accounted for 20% of total album sales in 2009 compared to 15% in 2008, 10% in 2007 and 5.5% in 2006
  • Flo Rida’s “Right Round” song set a new one week sales record with 636,000 downloads during week ending 2/15/09; marking the first time a song broke the 500,000 sales mark.
  • Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” song registered 610,000 downloads during week ending 12/27/2009 which was the second song to break the 500,000 barrier for one week.
  • 2009 is the first time a digital song broke the four million sales mark in a single year. There were four songs that achieved this milestone; Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” (4.8 million) and “I Got A Feeling” (4.42 million), Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” (4.4. million) and Flo Rida’s “Right Round” (4.1 million).
  • In 2009, there are 31 different digital songs with sales that exceeded two million, compared to 19 in 2008 and nine in 2007.
  • Lady Gaga is the biggest selling digital artist in 2009 with more than 15 million track sales.
  • There are more than 397,000 different physical albums that sold at least one copy over the Internet during 2009 compared to 450,000 in 2008 and 390,000 in 2007.
  • Interestingly, digital music hold outs The Beatles were the biggest selling group for 2009 with 3.3 million album sales.
  • And Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed a Dream is the best selling Internet album for the year with 405,000 sales as well as the biggest selling album during the “holiday season”.

Sling's Trio of New TV Placeshifting Devices Offers Lots of Streaming Goodness

    Posted Jan 6, 2010

What's strange about the three products is that it appears none of them will be available via retail channels. Instead, they'll all be provided from cable and satellite providers, who Sling hopes will follow Dish Network's lead.

The Sling Monitor 150 is a redesigned and repackaged model of last year's Sling Monitor, which connects to the internet via Wi-Fi, and pulls down streams from Sling devices inside your home. The 15.6-inch, 720p display lets you control and manage your primary DVR. Dish Network says they plan on being the first to offer the Sling monitor.

The Slingbox 700u is a Slingbox with a single USB cable—intended to plug into and directly interface with any compatible, internet-connected, set-top box. Sling calls it their smallest Slingbox available, and again, Dish Network plans on offering it first.

And finally, there's the Sling Receiver 300, which is kind of like a pared-down Slingcatcher, letting it connect to any TV and is intended catch Sling streams from Sling-enabled settop boxes, such as the fabled Echostar 922.

Because none of these will be offered via retail channels, pricing and availability aren't available. And let's keep our fingers crossed on Dish delivering the first two products to consumers.
